New GCC Trustee Appointed: Hauser & Wirth’s Cliodhna Murphy
Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Cliodhna Murphy, Global Head of Environmental Sustainability at Hauser & Wirth, as a new Trustee.
Cliodhna joins the GCC Board at a pivotal juncture in the organisation’s evolution. As GCC marks its fifth anniversary, halfway between its 2020 founding and its 2030 target to reduce visual arts sector emissions by 50%, this appointment represents both a moment of reflection and renewed ambition.
“We’re thrilled to welcome our longtime collaborator, Cliodhna, as GCC’s newest Trustee,” says Heath Lowndes, GCC Co-Founder and Director. “Cliodhna brings more than 20 years of experience and joins fellow Trustees and our Chair, Frances Morris, as a thought leader in environmental sustainability. Her proven commitment to finding practical climate solutions is matched by a generous, collaborative approach that strengthens the wider sector’s capacity for change. We look forward to her contributions and the positive impact her advocacy will have.”
A Longstanding Collaboration
Cliodhna has been involved with the Coalition since its earliest days, contributing as a volunteer, advisor, and frequent collaborator. From the outset, she has supported GCC’s mission to build a meaningful, industry-specific response to the climate crisis.
Hauser & Wirth has been part of GCC’s Supporter Circle since its inception in 2020 and an Active Member since 2022, helping to shape the coalition’s collective efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of exhibition-making, art shipping, and gallery operations. The gallery’s sustainability strategy - led by Cliodhna - centres on the belief that meaningful change is achieved through collaboration, transparency, and shared learning.
Under her leadership, Hauser & Wirth has embedded sustainability across its global operations: from carbon accounting and waste reduction to the integration of Science Based Targets, renewable energy sourcing, and regenerative initiatives across its galleries, farms, and hospitality projects. The gallery’s annual Sustainability Report publicly tracks its progress and challenges, setting a benchmark for accountability within the commercial art sector.
Hauser & Wirth’s work extends beyond internal operations to public engagement. Through programmes such as the Sustainability in Action conference series and initiatives with Murmur, MOCA LA’s Environmental Council, and GCC, the gallery helps to share practical frameworks and inspire collective action across the cultural field.
Experience and Vision
Cliodhna joined Hauser & Wirth in 2017 as Director of Operations and later became the gallery’s first Global Head of Environmental Sustainability in 2021. She has previously held roles at Frieze Fairs and Tate, and brings a deep understanding of the operational realities and systemic challenges facing the sector.
Her published work includes GCC case studies such as Sea Freight: Unlocking the Potential for International Art Transportation and Climate Action Tips, as well as guidance on setting Science Based Targets for arts organisations. Alongside her new Trustee role at GCC, Cliodhna serves as a Sustainability Advisor (Art) for the climate charity Murmur and sits on MOCA LA’s Environmental Council.
“I’m thrilled to join my fellow Trustees to amplify the work of the small but mighty GCC team,” says Cliodhna. “The solutions for a thriving, healthy planet already exist—what matters is how and when we put them into practice. One gallery or artist’s studio alone cannot shift the landscape, but through collective action we can increase our impact, build a movement, and contribute meaningfully to climate resilience in the art world and beyond.”
