GCC Talks To PACT Members

27 Sep 2022

GCC is a proud member of PACT (Partners on Art and Climate Targets). PACT is an international coalition of organisations within the visual arts engaged in collaborative efforts to accelerate the sector’s broad adoption of collective climate action. These  organisations are Art to Acres, Art + Climate Action, Art/Switch, Art to Zero, Artists Commit, Galleries Commit, Gallery Climate Coalition, Ki Culture.

By advocating for every individual’s agency, PACT amplifies voices and promotes collaboration for global change.  Each organisation within PACT offers their strengths,  to the coalition, inviting multiple pathways for engaging in meaningful climate action and allowing each initiative to innovate, explore solutions, and build community while supported by, and, in turn, supporting a collective, aligned network of changemakers

To celebrate the launch of our new website, GCC spoke with every member of PACT about what they’ve been working on recently:

Art to Acres

Art to Acres (A2A) had a full summer and recently completed conservation diligence, and a new commitment to support the large-scale conservation of 22 international, historic landscapes. On top of that, two new, locally-led protected areas were declared: Brindingabba, Australia at 33,431 hectares, and Loja, Ecuador at 44,224 hectares. Both locations are supported by artists' funding.

As of summer 2022, A2A has the honour of fiscally sponsoring GCC, Barder.art, Artists Commit, and Art + Climate Action in the United States, extending US non-profit status to these initiatives and coalitions. Recognising the importance of alliances across the art sector, A2A received a Teiger Grant to fund museum exhibition carbon calculations, using the GCC calculator and resources, and extending A2A's pro-bono carbon reporting till 2024.

Art + Climate Action

Art + Climate Action (A+CA) is a nonprofit collective that supports California arts organisations in their shift toward sustainable practices. In April 2022, two of A+CA's cofounders, Haley Mellin and Micki Meng, launched A Cool Million with For Freedoms to advocate for environmental justice programming in California museums, and for the preservation of a million acres of land.

This summer A+CA continued to add new museums and galleries to its list of emissions-assessment partners. It also continued to develop resources that will help these organisations improve their climate impact. Resources include a directory of climate-focused incentives and programs from federal, state, and local governments and foundations. On October 7th 2022, A+CA will relaunch monthly community meetings, co-organized with Galleries Commit, to increase participation in the dynamic and expanding conversation around sustainability in the arts.

Art/Switch

Art / Switch is a NYC/Amsterdam-based nonprofit started in 2019 to mediate and accelerate a climate conscious shift in the arts. As a knowledge centre, Art / Switch  brings together art professionals and academics to share resources, network, and publish work.

In 2020 - 2021, Art / Switch organised an international conference series [re]Framing the Arts: A Sustainable Shift, which will be released as an academic publication that is soon to be published. As a further development, they will launch The Vertical in early 2023—an online database and search tool, bringing together all existing practices, guidelines, articles and other resources that focus on environmental sustainability in the arts.

The next cureated conference series will take places in October 2023 and is going to explore the challenges and opportunities created by the digital art world. The topics will include recent digital developments as well as new technical solutions for the physical art world.

Art to Zero

Art to Zero’s recent work has focused on collaborating closely with small-to medium-scale non-profit exhibition spaces in New York City, working toward climate action in their daily practices. Projects have included data-gathering and analysis for Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emission calculations, strategy development for improved energy efficiency, and the piloting of strategies to achieve energy savings.

Future projects include assessing waste generation and developing schemes to reduce and more effectively manage waste, as well as generating communication materials to share news of projects, their challenges and successes. In addition, Art to Zero continues to collaborate on various exciting initiatives currently under development with fellow PACT members.

Artists Commit & Galleries Commit

Artists Commit and Galleries Commit are artist- and worker-led collectives committed to a climate conscious, resilient, and equitable future. This past year, Artists Commit supported artists on 12 Climate Impact Reports. These exhibition-based reports provide a framework for artists to start a conversation with the museums, galleries, curators, and other project partners with whom they collaborate in order to better understand the climate impact of exhibitions.

Galleries Commit partnered with Art to Acres to permanently conserve close to 200,000 acres of ecologically vital and vulnerable land in Peru through collective donations from over 50 galleries, institutions, and artists. We are continuing that partnership this fall with a new conservation site to be announced soon.

Join Galleries Commit x  Art + Climate Action for their next community meeting on Friday, October 7.
