SCF Partner Spotlight: ClientEarth

13 Sep 2023

As we launch our Strategic Climate Fund campaign, we wanted to highlight our five Strategic Climate Fund Partner organisations and the urgent work they’re doing to take action on the climate crisis. Each of these organisations work on projects that will have a positive impact within the 2030 timeframe.

ClientEarth is a leading environmental law charity with a unique approach – using the power of the law to drive systemic change and create lasting impact to protect the planet and all life on Earth.

Through legal interventions, strategic communications and advocacy, they find positive and practical solutions to fight climate change, stop pollution, and protect nature -  changing systems by informing, implementing and enforcing the law.

ClientEarth believes you can take on governments, hold businesses to account, and change financial markets. They believe that one well-placed, hard-won legal victory can change the system.

ClientEarth works in partnership across borders, systems and sectors in over 50 countries. Since their work in the UK began in 2007, the charity has achieved a number of significant milestones, including preventing the construction of large coal plants in Europe, challenging the UK government’s flawed net-zero strategy, and training new environmental lawyers in China.

The charity’s work has a wide scope. In Asia, ClientEarth works with governments, investors and civil society to accelerate the transition to clean energy and push for greener financial systems. In Europe, the team works with policymakers to create laws, strengthen weak ones, and ensure that laws are properly implemented.

In Central and Eastern Europe, ClientEarth focuses on protecting the most important wildlife and habitats, pushing for a coal phase-out by 2030 and protecting people’s health by tackling air pollution. Elsewhere, the charity’s forests programme has much experience in helping people who depend on forests, supporting people in West Africa, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

ClientEarth has offices in London, Brussels, Warsaw, Madrid, Berlin, Beijing, Los Angeles and Luxembourg. With 168 active cases globally, the charity shows no signs of slowing down.

Laura Clarke OBE, CEO of ClientEarth, says: “The support of the Gallery Climate Coalition and its members has been critical to our work at ClientEarth. It has helped us grow our presence and impact globally, as we seek to make the changes needed for people and planet to thrive.”
