Welcome to GCC Los Angeles (LA), an International Volunteer Chapter of Gallery Climate Coalition founded in July 2021, operating until Autumn 2024.
Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) is an international community of arts organisations working to reduce our sector’s environmental impacts.
GCC’s primary goal is to facilitate a reduction of the sector’s CO2e emissions by a minimum of 50% by 2030, as well as promoting zero waste.
GCC has created a carbon calculator specifically tailored to the art industry. This provides users with the means to determine and monitor their carbon footprint, and is available for use by GCC members. We encourage all members to share their results to bring about greater change.
GCC LA has been responsible for developing localised content and resources in line with GCC’s guidelines, hosting events, and engaging with our immediate networks on environmental issues within California’s arts sector. The aim is to collectively find sustainable solutions that can support California based arts organisations and professionals to save energy, reduce emissions and minimise waste.
GCC LA grew out of several months of discussions culminating in an event hosted by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and artist and Art to Acres Founder Haley Mellin. Following this presentation, GCC received an enthusiastic response from the LA art community, which led to a group of volunteers offering to establish a GCC Volunteer Chapter in the city. The group brings together the expertise and will of a cross-section of individuals from LA’s contemporary art scene.
The Chapter was self-organised and self-motivated whilst remaining closely aligned with GCC’s core targets and commitments. This platform is about being less competitive and more collaborative, in response to the urgent need to take climate action in the arts sector. -
