International Climate Control Conference

14 Dec 2022

“We are past the time of shaming. We need to break the cycle. We need to get climate control under control” - Tino Sehgal

Huge thanks to all those who contributed to and attended the first ever International Climate Control Conference last week!

We heard from an array of experts, museum directors, facilities managers, insurers, lawyers, researchers, and practitioners, each sharing knowledge, clarity, and invigorating insights into the failures of current climate control standards and the possibilities for taking action.

For those of you who were unable to join us for the ICCC, the full recording is now available to watch back.

To summarise the variety of insights and conclusions that were shared across the two days:

  • As one of the most carbon-intensive aspects of the cultural sector, we have to get climate control under control.

  • The stricter and rigid ranges we’ve become accustomed to implementing for climate control are not always best practices, and in some cases can actually harm artworks and objects.

  • Collections are complex, and every collection has its own needs.

  • As a sector, we need to empower one another to harness our expertise and make balanced decisions based on the requirements of the objects in our care, alongside the needs of our planet.

  • Transparency and honesty about this process is critical.

  • Only collectively can we make this shift.

Given the urgency of the intersecting climate and energy crises we face, it’s never been more crucial for the sector to transition to environmentally responsible practices.

This is the beginning of the movement, and we invite you to join the next phase by registering for Ki Future’s Getting Climate Control Under Control Program. Starting January 2023, this 18 month Pilot will provide coaching and training for your entire staff and walk your museum through the process of changing your climate control conditions. Guided by leading experts in preventive conservation and energy efficiency, and focused on collective action, the Pilot Program will ensure that your transition to more environmentally sustainable practices also maintains the best preservation conditions for your collections.
