The End of 'Offsetting'?

Conventional offsetting projects can be positive initiatives, but they are not a perfect solution. Crucially, they cannot be relied upon to remove sufficient carbon from the atmosphere in the urgent timeframe currently posed by the climate crisis. So what else can we do?
